Heat Pumps & Hydrogen: The low-carbon heating future
The Government recently set out its major 10-point plan for a ‘green industrial revolution’ intended to accelerate the UK towards its ambitious goal of becoming net-zero carbon by 2050. The plan committed considerable investment to support increased deployment of both heat pump and hydrogen technologies, confirming their significance as future low carbon replacements for gas and oil within the domestic heating sector.
H&V News brought together key players within both the heat pumps and hydrogen sectors for an exciting and engaging webinar debate. The discussion covered how the two technologies will need to be developed in order to step up to the challenge of meeting the new targets of 600,000 heat pumps every year by 2028 and 5GW of hydrogen production capacity by 2030, as well as examining whether ground source heat pumps and hydrogen can work in a mutually beneficial way to achieve a truly zero-carbon future for the UK.
Discussing the deployment of ground source heat pump technology was Matthew Trewhella, Managing Director of Kensa Contracting; and speaking about the future of hydrogen was Tommy Isaac, Principal Engineer at Progressive Energy Ltd, both of whom spoke at the virtual HVAC Summit in September.
The panel consisted of Dave Pearson, Group Sustainable Director of Star Refrigeration, and Steven Ashurst, Principal Analyst at Delta-EE. Andrew Gaved of H&V News hosted the webinar.
